BLACK HISTORY MONTH PROGRAMS AT THE 1978 ARTS CENTER IN MAPLEWOOD, NJ ART & FILMS BY CAMILLE BILLOPS
January 24, 2008 Camille Billops : Acknowledgement Bodes Concern showcases the artwork of this filmmaker, painter, sculptor and printmaker who, with her husband, professor James Hatch, documents African American life. This show will run from January 6, 2008 to February 17, 2008. Camille's work strives to show that acknowledgement of people hurt by the inherent insult bodes concern for the victims. Her art suggests that we can abolish the negative impact of this hurt and these insults through control of the context in which the work is presented to the viewer. This artistic control, while refusing to flinch from the truth, is infused with sensitivity.
This sensitivity can also be seen in her films, which will be shown at Gallery 1978 over the course of the exhibition. Film screenings will be as follows:

1978 Jazz and Film Night: February 8, 2008 begins at 8:00 p.m. It will be a tribute to Professor Longhair, featuring ace pianist, Matt King. There is a $10 admission fee that includes refreshments.
