Dr. Albert List, Jr. Botanist, Artist And Professor Emeritus at Drexel University

A botanist, professor and artist with a generous spirit, Dr. Albert List, Jr. of Doylestown, PA died in 2005 after a long illness.  Al was a recognized expert on the New Jersey Pinelands who published numerous books on its flora.  He joined Brion Galleries as an artist just after we moved to Lambertville, NJ in the summer of 1998.  We will miss his gentle nature and his insightful conversation.  Al’s paintings remained on view at Brion Galleries until we received a serious offer from the preschool that bought our property in 2005.

Al  List had his last one-man show in Brion Galleries’ main Parlor Gallery in May 0f 2001.  Titled Portraits of Nature: New Works by Dr. Albert List, Jr., it was also appropriately dubbed Wild Places.  It included over a dozen paintings and drawing.   Many of the watercolors explored the curves and shadows of Montgomery County’s (PA)  wilder places near his home in Doylestown.

This show not only highlighted Al’s artistic talents but also his incredible stamina.  He had been very busy during the six months prior to his show.  Al had not only finished writing a new book, but he had also managed to create over a dozen wonderful new watercolors and acrylic paintings of his favorite subject – Mother Nature.  As a botanical illustrator, Dr. List did tropical field work in Costa Rica and Guyana.  He produced and illustrated six field manuals in Costa Rica.  He also wrote Wildflowering Barrens a 220 page illustrated book, published by Botanical Associates, which sold out in one year.  Along with his sister Ilka List, he wrote a children’s book titled A Walk in the Forest, Published by Harper and Row.  Since 1994, Dr. List had been writing and illustrating a field manual to plants of the New Jersey Pine Barrens (approximately 1000 pages) as well as on a field guide for families of plants in Bucks County.

Dr. Al List remained active (until 2001 at least) in teaching Botanical Illustration and a new course in Ethnobotany at Drexel University in Philadelphia.  Respected worldwide as a scientist, Dr. List was also known for the accuracy, design and passion of his art.
