Jim Fuess is a master of color and movement. His acrylics swirl across each canvas, manifesting moods, creatures and worlds as does a dream. His abstractions delight the eye and the mind, both of which are encouraged to experience more at each viewing.. DEB 2009
Artist’s Statement
I work with liquid acrylic paint on canvas. Most of my work is abstract, but there are recognizable forms and faces in a number of the paintings. I am striving for grace and fluidity, movement and balance. I like color and believe that beauty can be an artistic goal. The most recent work deals with negative space and the edges of the canvas. The work is lyrical, energetic, colorful and sometimes spooky or humorous.
The painting technique involves using squeeze bottles with different viscosities of liquid paint, two brands of paint, and a number of interchangeable nozzles of different apertures.
Most of the work I have been doing for the past four years is small. The work is easy and inexpensive to transport.

BIOGRAPHY
While studying for his doctorate at The University of Massachusetts, a friend who was moving away, gave Jim some paints and told him to play. This play has evolved over the years into the masterful, liquid, abstracts that you see today.
Born in New Zealand, Jim Fuess spent his formative years in Chile and Africa. He lived for two years each in New Zealand, Africa and South America and a total of seven years in Italy. This international life-experience has affected his work in both its form and its palette. His time in South America can be seen in the bright hues that play on his canvases and Jim's love of form and movement, as well as both humorous and wicked content, come, at least partly, from his Italian experience. "Even though my paintings are abstract, they have the structure and form of the Italian Renaissance, which I love." says Jim.
EDUCATION
Jim has a BA in English and an MA in Comparative Religions from Goddard College. He also studied Comparative Literature in the PhD program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
